Rishi Arka was a force of nature—handsome, mischievous, and just a little too violent for his own good. At nine years old, he had already mastered the art of troublemaking, and his world revolved around his family, his friends, and, most importantly, a tiny firefly in his life—Heeranya Davala.
Heeranya Davala, at eight, was no less of a terror. Cute, yes. Innocent? Not even close. She wasn’t an angry bull charging into fights, but she was a mini monster in disguise. If Rishi was chaos, she was the spark that lit the fire. And together, they were nothing short of a storm waiting to happen.
That afternoon, the storm had already arrived.
“Rishi, stop running behind Heeru!” Neonika’s sharp voice rang out across the courtyard as she watched her son chase after the girl with unwavering determination. “Why do you always trouble her?”
“Mom, you don’t know what she did to me at school!” Rishi protested, his grip tightening around Heeranya’s wrist as she struggled to free herself.
Heeranya wasn’t one to back down from a fight. “No, Neo Aunty! I didn’t do anything!” she cried, twisting in his hold. “Rishi, leave my hand! Neonika Aunty, tell him to leave me!”
Before Neonika could respond, another voice cut through the commotion. “Heeranya!” Devika Davala, her mother, appeared at the doorway, arms crossed and eyebrows raised in that way that made every ounce of defiance drain from Heeranya’s face. “How many times have I told you not to tease Rishi? But do you ever listen to me? No. Now, tell me—what ‘great achievement’ did you accomplish at school today?”
Heeranya, knowing better than to face her mother’s wrath, didn’t wait for a scolding. In a flash, she broke free from Rishi’s grip and dashed behind Neonika, gripping the edge of her saree like it was a shield that could protect her from the impending storm.
Meanwhile, Rishi took a different approach—he threw himself into Devika’s arms with exaggerated distress. “Devika Aunty, how do you even tolerate her? I can’t stand her for even a minute!”
Neonika smirked, patting Heeranya’s head as she looked at her son. “Rishi, that’s enough. Don’t say a word against my Heeru.”
Rishi’s jaw dropped. “Ohh! Your Heeru?” His eyes darted to the girl still cowering behind his mother. “This tiny troublemaker? Do you even know what she did—”
“Hey!” Heeranya shot out from behind Neonika, pointing an accusing finger at him. “Don’t call me tiny-winy! You’re the giant monkey monster here!”
Devika rubbed her temples. “Enough, Heeranya! What did you do this time?”
Rishi grinned, his eyes twinkling with the satisfaction of someone about to expose a great crime. “Aunty, I’ll tell you everything…”
And just like that, the storm raged on.
